Indian Summer
Alive and Kicking
This is one of my favorite films. "Indian Summer" is a love story; this is a story of the way from a mentality of a selfish boy to the life position of an adult man. Two men, two worlds. Dance plus psychology does a strange mixture of feelings; life is not as easy as you get used to in your big world of dance and when you tries to have a lover from the other universe (not a dancer, not an actor) your gigantic world becomes too small, too tiny, it can be broken with one word or one touch. Tolerance, patience, honesty will be your guides if you'll wish. You must wish. You must be a man.
Anthony Higgins performs in a very small, but one of the most dramatic parts in the picture, with all elegance and passion he can. His personage, Ramon, the dying choreographer, appears only for some minutes in the beginning of the film and in one short take in the middle of it. Small drops of information about this personage flow in the whole film - Ramon's soft Spanish (sorry, Cuban) accent, his house, some photos on a table tell the story of his life, his love and his career - so the complete image of this person appears before your inner view, so you are under this effect all along the picture. Perfect example of superior acting task, thanks to director and editor.
It's not the first time Anthony Higgins plays gay. First was "Something for Everyone" in 1970 and the next one will be ©Law and Order: UK" in 2009.
Russian translation of the title as "Alive and Dying" made Higgins' personage leading. It's funny, isn't it?
