Napoleon and Josephine: A Love Story
This mini-series was very popular at the end of 1980s and illustrates Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine de Beauharnais's love story from a romantic point of view, from 1794 until Josephine's death in 1814.
Magnificent Armand Assante as Napoleon has made a great work. His Napoleon is not only a soldier, but also is a man who found his true love. Everyone, who saw Assante in this role, can remember the tears and epileptic attacks. It was very impressive.
Anthony Higgins is Napoleon's elder brother, Joseph, who is as evil as all the rest of the Bonapartes, and he has an evil face with minimal facial gestures. Like everyone in this historical film, he has a stylish hairstyle and some good costumes. I like the way he plays this role, the way his character trying to be Napoleon's best brother, who can't save the great man from disappointments in love and who, as the series shows, gets nothing, but a small principality in appreciation. You may go farther and fare worse - this is the idea. Actually, it is not the complete historical truth.
You can read about the real Joseph Bonaparte, King of Naples and Sicily, King of Spain and the Indies, you can read at Wikipedia page.
This is the first time Anthony was engaged to play in Napoleon's story in a made-for-television film. The second time would twenty years later, in 2007, in the BBC's "Heroes and Villaines: Napoleon", when he played General Dugommier.
